Empowering the Voluntary Sector
9:30am to 4:30pm

Prudential Ibis Club, Scours Lane, READING, RG30 6AY   >> map

A one day workshop exploring how to use the principles of public law to challenge unjust and unfair decision making by public bodies.

Many organizations find it difficult to balance the need to work with public bodies and to challenge unfair practice. The Empowering the Voluntary Sector workshops are delivered by NAVCA (National Association for Voluntary & Community Action) and provide clear information and guidance to help you to make appropriate challenges. The workshop agenda will follow:
1. Introduction to public law
2. Public law wrongs
3. Compact non compliance
4. Making a challenge
5. Public law remedies.

Kevin Curley, chief executive of NAVCA, says "Successfully challenging an adverse decision can not only secure vital community services, it can be an empowering experience which helps combat the very roots of social exclusion."

Reading Voluntary Action would like to involve as many smaller or new groups as possible, as well as hoping that as many groups that can be seen as hard to reach will take advantage of this training opportunity. Places are strictly on a first come first served basis and no bookings will be accepted without a booking form and the fee. Please note we cannot accept bookings onto the workshop from public bodies.

Places will cost £30 per head including refreshments and lunch. Smaller groups and volunteers will be offered a further discount on places depending on income of £5-£10 per place.

If you would like any further information or to book a place please contact Merlyn Barrett at merlyn@volaction.demon.co.uk or telephone 0118 9574123.

Parking is available at the IBIS club and the bus route that is closest to the venue from Reading is the number 17.
