This one day event is aimed at equipping small organisations with the background understanding of the way journalists work and the practical tools to get coverage through them.
It's a workshop for people coming to media work for the first time - they know it makes sense in terms of spreading the message for their organisation, but have concerns over loss of control to journalists, being mis-represented or simply fear the idea of being interviewed. The course aims to address all of these issues drawing on the 24 years experience in PR in the not for profit sector that the trainer has. We hope that delegates leave feeling enthused about working with journalists and confident that they can manage the relationship they set up with the media. To give an idea of the content, the first part of the day is a role play exercise in which delegates play the part of journalists to learn how the media go about their work and to identify how they might develop a win / win situation with them.
We then spend some time on news releases - first with a presentation of hints and tips on writing effective news releases then an exercise to write a release with group feedback as we progress. The latter part of the day is then spent looking at what happens when a journalists does an interview, and specifically at how the broadcast media work. The cost fort his event is £10 per place, lunch is included. This event is open to staff and volunteers. Please note that no bookings will be accepted without a booking form and the fee. Please contact Merlyn Barrett for booking form and information.
