Cancer Research UK seeks volunteers to work in a number of roles to support
participants in the Cancer Research Race for Life event on Sunday 13 July.

ABC to Read (Assisting Berkshire Children to Read) seeks volunteers to work
one to one with children aged 6-11 in primary schools in various areas of
Reading, during school hours. The main idea is to make the children feel
happy and successful, so they start to think of reading as something they
can enjoy. Volunteers work outside the classroom situation, reading, playing
games and talking to build a relationship with the child. Min commitment of
one year required. 5 training sessions must be completed. The next
sessions begin in September in Woodley. References and Police checks are
required.
Thames Valley Police Special Constabulary seeks volunteers for a wide range
of policing duties, mainly uniform patrols (either on foot or by car),
occasionally assisting with policing of public events. This is an excellent
introduction into the police service for those wanting to become a full-time
officer. Volunteers must pass Police Medical and be able to commit to a
minimum of 18 hours per month, be reliable, honest and calm in stressful
circumstances Training takes place over 8 weekends (5 residential) over a
12 week period followed by ongoing mentoring and training. Mileage and meal
allowance can be paid. References and Police checks are required. For

Reading Association for the Blind seeks:-
(a) a volunteer to make and serve tea/coffee for a group of about 10 people
who are elderly and visually impaired.
(b) a volunteer with a clean driving licence to drive the Blind Society
minibus to collect members from home in the morning and take them to Walford
Hall for handicraft clubs and then return them home in the afternoon. Big
Wheelers Minibus Driving Training is given. An escort helps on bus
journeys.
Time commitment for each role is 3 hours 10-1pm during school term time only
on Wednesdays
Me2 Club seeks volunteers who are reliable, patient and understanding to
support children with disabilities or additional needs to attend mainstream
leisure activities such as Brownies, Cubs, sports and drama clubs. The time
involved is dependent on child’s activity, usually about 2 hours.
References and Police checks are required.
Flying Pie Mural Projects, an organisation that brings positive and creative
people together in an artistic way to paint mural projects in the community,
for the community, seeks volunteers who are creative, have imagination and
an eye for detail for regular meetings 3 hours on Saturdays – afternoon or
evening - to share various roles involved in organising, overseeing and
painting of public murals (Volunteers do not need organising skills).
Training is given. Police checks are sometimes required. Art materials are
supplied free and possibly travel expenses.
Inspire 4Life seeks:-
(a) volunteers with computer experience and patience to help over-60s on
Thursday mornings 9.30 or 11.00 start for 1.5 hour sessions, to learn basic
computer skills on regular 6-week courses. Training is provided by existing
volunteers and helpers.
(b) Volunteers with an interest in bicycle maintenance/renovations to
support session leader who will run after school bicycle repair sessions for
children aged 10-11 and their parents/carers on Monday and Wednesday
afternoons and Saturday mornings.
References and Police checks are required.
The Living Rainforest, Thatcham, seeks volunteers for a number of roles:-
(a) Admin. assistant with office experience and able to work as part of a
team to assist the Volunteer Co-ordinator in the general running and growth
of the department, updating volunteer handbooks and files, recruiting new
volunteers and supporting co-ordination of volunteers from different
departments.
(b) An assistant to help the Marketing Officer with brand development, news
releases, brochure design and distribution, exhibition attendance and
events.
The days and hours worked are negotiable
(c) Interpretation volunteer with good written communication skills, an
interest in environmental conservation and sustainable life styles and able
to carry out in-depth research to assist with the development of The Living
rainforest’s new guidebook, signage, display materials and web information.
Full training will be provided. Time commitment is 11-3pm on Saturdays and
Sundays.
(d) Marketing Admin/event organisation. Assisting the Marketing Officer
with brand development, news releases, brochure design and distribution,
exhibition attendance and events. A professional and friendly manner, good
communication, numeracy and IT skills are required. Time commitment is 4
hours on weekdays which are flexible to suit the volunteer. Full training
will be provided and on-the-job support as needed.
