Voluntary workers now entitled to free qualifications through Train to Gain
14 August 2008
Local charity-based company Berkshire Scout Enterprises Ltd (BSEL), have been given the opportunity to provide free training for volunteers in voluntary and community organisations in Berkshire.
The government’s Train to Gain scheme originally available only to commercial businesses has now been extended to include workers in the voluntary sector. BSEL, as a company that recruits and places volunteers was invited by the Learning & Skills Council to carry out a pilot scheme to establish a frame work for introducing Train to Gain to volunteers. They have now been granted a contract to provide the training and support for NVQs.
NVQs will be available through personal learning plans, support and training where the voluntary work takes place so there will be little or no disruption to the volunteer’s activities.
Alan Beavis, Chairman of BSEL welcomes the new scheme and the company’s involvement, ‘Although this is a slight departure from our usual role of helping long term unemployed and people with disabilities into work, we have a long-standing and wide range of experience with government funded projects and expertise in support for training’.
Because of its connection with Scouts and Girlguiding and it’s understanding of the commitment required, the company are concentrating in the first instance on Adult volunteers of these two movements with NVQs in Activity Leadership and Team Leading. It is also talking with other voluntary and charitable organisations who are heavily dependent upon volunteers, and will be offering a further range of appropriate NVQs (eg: Customer Service, Child Care, etc) that can be achieved whilst volunteering.
A key objective of BSEL is to provide methods of gaining NVQs that will be available to suit individual and organisation needs. If you or your organisation, feel that Train to Gain could be of benefit to you, then contact the Company for further information.
