Reading Credit Union wins share in Peoples' Millions
3 December 2008
Reading Credit Union has been awarded £52,183 thanks to residents and businesses in Reading who pledged their support during a national BIG lottery vote on 26 November.
The award cheque was presented by ITV Thames Valley (supporters of BIG lottery’s Peoples’ Millions scheme) at their offices in East Street, Reading, at midday on Thursday 27 November. The £52,183 grant is a share of £5.5 million of BIG lottery funding that has been awarded to charities and organisations all over the country. Through the BIG Lottery Fund's People's Millions, 89 organisations have been given a significant financial boost to help improve the quality of life of people in their local communities.
Reading Credit Union, a local non-profit savings and financial services organisation, succeeded in achieving this funding because so many people voted for them in a nationwide phone poll on Peoples’ Millions voting day. The grant will be put towards leasing a new office closer to the town and they hope to be able to move into the new building by next spring.
Stephen Magee, Chairman of Reading Credit Union, said: “Everyone at the credit union was absolutely delighted when we found out we’d been successful and won the lottery funding. This money will enable us to move forward on our plans to better serve the Reading community and be in a more central location. We’d like to thank everyone who voted, we are very excited and very relieved.”
Bet Tickner, Lead Councillor for Communities and Neighbourhoods, said: “This is great news! It looks like a lot of people have helped Reading Credit Union to reach its goal. A shop front in central Reading will enable the Union to really boost its presence in the town and provide a vital service to residents in the years ahead.”
