Bringing Community Together on PR issue

News from: Association of Reading Malayalees (ARMS)

by Jim Jacob (President, ARMS)

5 May 2009

Association of Reading Malayalees, after its inauguration on 7th March 2009 commenced campaigning for the PR issue, which has become a matter of concern for many Malayalee families. ARMS prepared a petition to the local MPs and obtained signatures from most of the Malayalee families staying in and around Reading.
On 24th April, 2009 ARMS representatives met with the members of parliament Mr. Robert Wilson MP and Mr. Martin Salter MP and briefed them about the shortfalls of the new PR law to be implemented and submitted the mass petition to the MPs.
ARMS highlighted the crux of the PR issue to the MPs that extending the period required for indefinite leave to remain to 8 years is not a fair deal to the legal immigrants who came to this country with a belief that they could earn permanent residency after 5 years.
Both the MPs Mr. Robert Wilson and Mr. Martin Salter have been very keen to listen to the issues raised by us. Mr. Martin Salter MP has informed us that he would bring this issue to the attention of British Government. Mr. Robert Wilson MP will inform his decision to us after studying our petition. ARMS would like to extend a 'BIG THANK YOU' to our MPs for the kind courtesy extended to us during our meetings.
ARMS would like to thank all the Malayalee families who have been supporting the PR campaign.
