Community group’s rent hike outrage

A community group in Calcot is calling for a public meeting to challenge a bid to put up its rent by almost 130 per cent.
Calcot Community Association (CCA) is demanding its landlord – Tilehurst Parish Council – attends a public meeting on Friday, August 14, at 8pm to discuss the hike in its lease from £3,500 to £8,000 year.
The association wants the public, the press and Reading West MP Martin Salter there to hear the parish council explain its case for increasing the rent.
CCA leases a building in High View from the parish council and in turn allows the hall to be used by other organisations including the WI and clubs for the elderly. The association runs a bar there every evening and at weekends and provides facilities for cribbage, darts and pool teams as well as family activities.
