National Volunteer-involving organisations wanted to help the long term unemployed

Real Help for Communities: Volunteers, Charities and Social Enterprises is the government’s action plan outlining £42.5 million support for the third sector in the difficult economic climate. This included an investment of up to £10 million in a volunteer brokerage scheme for unemployed people.

The volunteer brokerage scheme, which is run jointly between ourselves, BTCV, v and CSV, will create access to around 34,000 work-focussed volunteering opportunities across England, Scotland and Wales for people to learn new skills and give back to communities through volunteering.

Job Centre Plus will be referring potential volunteers to brokers who would then work together to identify suitable volunteering placements (these could be new or existing opportunities) that would help jobseekers to develop their skills and employability as well as offering them volunteering experience.

The scheme is seeking national organisations that may be able to provide opportunities for volunteers across the country. If you work with or represent national volunteer-involving organisations who may be interested in providing volunteering opportunities to the long-term unemployed, and would be interested in joining organisations such as Barnardo’s and the RSPB to support jobseekers, please contact our Volunteering Brokerage Scheme Development Manager by email at james.lambert@volunteeringengland.org james.lambert@volunteeringengland.org> .
