The aims of Berkshire Humanists are to:
1. Promote an awareness and knowledge of Humanism in our area
2. Be available to present a Humanist point of view when needed
3. Provide opportunities for members to meet and exchange ideas
4. Facilitate the provision of non-religious ceremonies for funerals, weddings, baby-naming and other private and public occasions.
We meet, at present in member's homes, on the second Sunday of each month to socialise and discuss issues of current and wider concern to Humanists. A public meeting to be held at a central venue is in the first stages of planning and we hope this will become an annual event. When asked, we visit schools to encourage comparative religious studies by putting the Humanist viewpoint to pupils, usually alongside other religions and beliefs. We offer a website, forum and telephone advice whenever freedom of Human rights comes into conflict over religious matters. We are developing contacts with other organisations including the Reading Interfaith Forum, Reading Faith Forum and those covered by Reading Voluntary Action.
